چکیده

Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculations are performed to examine the forward scattering effects on retrievals of dust aerosol optical depth (AOD) from ground-based instruments. We consider dust aerosols with different AOD, effective radius and imaginary refractive index at 0.5 mm wavelength. The shape of dust aerosols is assumed to be spheroids and the equivalent spheres that preserve both volume and projected area (V/P) are also considered. The single-scattering albedos and asymmetry factors of spheroids and V/P-equivalent spheres have small differences, but the scattering phase functions are very different for the scattering angle range 90–1801. The relative errors of retrieved AOD caused by forward scattering effects due to the differences between the single-scattering properties of spheroids and spheres are similar. It is shown that at solar zenith angle (SZA) smaller than 701 the effect of the forward scattering is generally small although the relative errors in retrieved AOD can be as large as 10% when re=2. However, the largest relative errors, which can reach 40%, appear at high SZA (4 701) with AOD larger than 1. This is not caused by the increase of forward scattering intensity, but is due to the strong attenuation of solar direct beam. & 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A long-term record of aerosol optical depth from TOMS observations and comparison to AERONET measurements

Observations of backscattered near-ultraviolet radiation from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) on board the Nimbus-7 (1979–92) and the Earth Probe (mid-1996 to present) satellites have been used to derive a long-term record of aerosol optical depth over oceans and continents. The retrieval technique applied to the TOMS data makes use of two unique advantages of near-UV remote sensing...

The effect and correction of aerosol forward scattering on retrieval of aerosol optical depth from Sun photometer measurements

[1] The Sun photometer is widely used to retrieve aerosol optical depth (AOD). In this study, the effect of atmospheric forward scattering on the measurement of direct solar irradiance is analyzed. In most cases, this effect can be safely neglected. However, in the case of heavy dust loading, errors in AOD derived from Sun photometer measurements can be significant which warrants a correction o...

Changes in Aerosol Optical and Micro-Physical Properties over Northeast Asia from a Severe Dust Storm in April 2014

This study focuses on analyzing the changes to aerosol properties caused by the dust storm called “China’s Great Wall of Dust” that originated from the Taklimakan Desert in April 2014. IDDI (Infrared Difference Dust Index) images from FY-2E and true color composite images from FY-3C MERSI (Medium Resolution Spectral Imager) show the breakout and transport path of the dust storm. Three-hourly gr...

Investigating the relationship between ground-level particulate matter and aerosol optical depth during dust storm episodes: a case study of Tehran

Background and Objective: During the last few years, air pollution and increasing levels of particulate matters (PMs) have become major public health issues in the megacity of Tehran. The high cost of constructing and maintaining air pollution monitoring stations has made it difficult to achieve adequate spatial-temporal coverage of PM data over various regions. In this regard, the use of remot...

Measuring Aerosol Absorption from Omi near Uv Observations

An assessment of OMI retrievals of aerosol properties is presented. We compare OMI retrieved values of extinction and absorption optical depth, and aerosol single scattering albedo to AERONET ground-based measurements. An evaluation of the accuracy of the retrievals for a limited number of observations under cloud-free conditions shows a positive offset of about 0.03 in retrieved optical depth....
